Brighten winter days with a big box of grapefruits from Pittman & Davis

My love affair with grapefruit started long ago. My school in Dallas offered grapefruit halves (with a maraschino cherry in the middle!) for lunch every day. (I guess they still offer them. You can spot a couple of grapefruits in this pinterest photo!) Along with corn muffins and chess pie, they were a staple of my lunches for 10 years.

Early in my marriage to Dear Husband, after years in California, a friend of my parents from Texas started sending us boxes of grapefruit from Pittman & Davis every Christmas. Pittman & Davis, in case you are unaware, picks the best Texan ruby red grapefruits and sends them out across the country. And here’s a few reasons why you should place an order yourself!

An amazing and inexpensive gift

I’ve sent grapefruits from Pittman & Davis to friends, to co-workers, to people on my team, off and on for years. And everyone raves about them. At a time when boxes of packaged (gross) cookies and sad wine and cheese baskets are the gifting norm, grapefruits are healthy, refreshing and pretty delightful. And I love that each one has a little bit of my Texas history; they feel unique and personal to send.

And if you want to get really fancy, you could include one of my favorite Texan cookbooks along with the grapefruits- for a pretty terrific gift!

A healthy treat

Grapefruits are very healthy and a welcome alternative during this festive period. I’m not going to lie- I love a piece of pumpkin pie. Or apple pie. Or pecan pie. You get the idea! But half a grapefruit is a great dose of vitamin C and a nice end to a meal.

I would keep in mind that grapefruits don’t work with some medications. So do give that some thought before deciding that boxes of grapefruits from Pittman & Davis are perfect for everyone on your list.

Lots of recipes and options to consider

I do love a grapefruit half, straight up. But there are so many other things you can do with the 12-18 grapefruits you’ll receive. You can broil them. You can substitute grapefruit for lemon in a traditional pound cake. Back in the day, I was a fan of grapefruit margaritas; now I love a grapefruit lime spritzer. What about a shrimp, grapefruit, avocado salad? Or poached salmon with grapefruit basil sauce?

What do all these recipes have in common? They are wonderful, lighter options to the traditional holiday fare that many of us are eating too often.

Why not order yourself a little January present?

After all the Christmas decorations have been put away and you’re contemplating a bleak January, trust me on this: You will be thrilled to have a box of grapefruits from Pittman & Davis arrive on your doorstep. Consider this my December PSA- this isn’t even a sponsored post! 🙂 Order some grapefruits!
