Why I love ordering from Good Eggs

I can’t believe in over three years of writing this blog, I’ve never written a post about why I love ordering from Good Eggs. Because it’s really a great company and I have lots of great things to say. Plus a few shopping tips for using the service.

A recent Good Eggs delivery. That’s an amazing baguette from As Kneaded Bakery sticking out of the box 🙂 We call it “3 Hour bread” because that’s about how long it lasts!

Good Eggs is a food delivery service in the Bay Area and now LA. We’ve been ordering from them for 5+ years. And they were absolute champs during the pandemic lockdowns. There were times when we couldn’t bear another crazy Safeway shopping trip, and Good Eggs came through, time after time.

I’ll say upfront that ordering from Good Eggs is not cheap. Not only do they sell rather expensive brands, but there does seem to be a bit of a generous markup on some of them. There’s also significant delivery charges, including a “Good Jobs fee” (for living wages) and a convenience fee (which seems to apply to almost every delivery.)

That said, I am a big fan, but I’ve also got some tips to make your shopping experience a bit more optimized than it might otherwise be.

What’s great about ordering from Good Eggs

Buying high-end items from across the Bay Area

In a recent order, we received bread from As Kneaded Bakery (in San Leandro), a Father’s Day pie from Black Jet Baking (in San Francisco), and meat from Stemple Creek Ranch (in Marin.) There’s no place near Lamorinda which brings together all these brands in one place. And there’s no way I’m driving around to pick all this stuff up! So ordering from Good Eggs is marvelous at saving me time.

Trying out some new things, in smaller sizes

With every order, I peruse their new offerings and usually add 1-2 items to try out. It might be new coffee beans or some Momofuku chili crunch. And I’m glad I did try it out- because I really don’t get all the buzz about chili crunch! So lesson learned. But it’s a fun and low stakes way to try new ingredients and purveyors of great food across the Bay Area.

I’ve also tried some of their meal kits and then replicated the recipes myself a cheaper price. Their Orange Chicken with broccoli is a better version of the Trader Joe’s version- and it’s so simple (and cheaper) to replicate it at home.

When you are feeling super lazy

This was especially true during the pandemic- when going to the grocery store was like entering into battle. There were special hours for seniors, and the lines, social distancing, crazy masking was enough to drive me nuts. Good Eggs was a way to avoid yet another grocery store battle. But even these days, it can be a challenge to get to the store with work hours. With a strategic order, I can get 2-3 dinners, a few new items, and get some milk and eggs- avoiding a midweek trip to Trader Joe’s.

Ordering from Good Eggs is particularly great for holidays. In fact, we order Thanksgiving and Christmas meals almost exclusively from them. I make some of the sides, but we order turkey/ham/gravy/pies from them every year. And it saves us the time and hassle of dealing with the crowds at Whole Foods on December 24th.

You can even save some money

Yes, I know, it’s hard to believe! But if you need some Rancho Gordo beans or want to order Boichik bagels- get ready for a minimum order- either just to get a delivery or for free shipping. Sometimes it makes sense to add some Marcella beans to a Good Eggs order instead of placing a Rancho Gordo order for $50+ worth of beans to get free shipping.

But let’s face it, ordering from Good Eggs shouldn’t be your main source of food

I can’t escape it- it’s quite expensive. When I saw a gallon of organic milk at almost $10, I did take a step back. (It’s at $8.29 right now, but still. It was $5.99 at Trader Joe’s yesterday.)

It has been the source of some good Amazon purchases though! I tried out the items below from Good Eggs, and then bought them in larger (and per unit cheaper) amounts from Amazon. You might want to do the same! Here are a few things I’ve put on repeat from Amazon, thanks to Good Eggs discovery.

Ortiz Bonito Del Norte tuna in olive oil (6 for $33)

Crunch Time Peanut Butter (6 for $34)

Rummo pasta- penne rigate (5 for $19)

All in all, thank you to Good Eggs!

Despite my gripes about the cost, I continue to place an order every 2-3 weeks. They arrive on time, and the orders are almost always perfect. I don’t see myself quitting Good Eggs any time soon!
