All the props you need to get the most out of restorative yoga

A recent rediscovery for me has been restorative yoga. In the past month, I’ve realized how much I miss it. I like to do it after work. It helps me wind down my day and gives me some time to meditate. I want to share some yoga props you will need to get the most out of restorative yoga.

I discovered restorative yoga at Rancho La Puerta years ago. They offer the class at the Ranch every day at 4pm, after I would have finished hiking, spinning, weight training and a bunch of other things. So I was always worn out (and pretty sweaty, to be honest!)

These days, it’s a great transition from “work” mode to “relax” mode, especially as we are still working from home. Those boundaries can get a little blurry. Amy and I were discussing how that transition can easily be accomplished with a glass of wine, but restorative yoga is probably a bit healthier! And to get the most out of it, you’ll need some restorative yoga props.

Basic restorative yoga props

Bolster

At first, I thought I could get away with using a regular pillow or throw pillow from the sofa, but it really didn’t work. They aren’t the right size and they aren’t firm enough. Invest once in a bolster and it’s unlikely you’ll need to buy another one for a long time (how would it ever wear out??)

Blocks

Yoga blocks are useful restorative yoga props, but they are also great for other yoga disciplines. Get two, you can thank me later 🙂

Blanket(s)

Of course you can use blankets that you already have on hand, but I bought a couple of the “traditional” Mexican blankets, like they have at the Ranch. They are supportive, washable and the right size for restorative yoga poses.

Yoga session guidance

You’re going to need some sort of guidance during your session, for a truly great restorative yoga experience. I guess you can some free sessions on Youtube, as long as you don’t mind being interrupted by ads (which might sort of ruin the mood…) I advise paying for good guidance; it’s worth it and frankly, the instructors need our support right now. I am using the Peloton app, and the quality of the sessions has been wonderful. I just wish they had a few more 30 minute sessions…

My daily afternoon yoga session has become a highlight of my day, and having the right restorative yoga props makes it a lot more enjoyable. They aren’t expensive, and they are a worthwhile investment in such a relaxing hobby.
