Longing for London: Love for Liberty London

Update for July 2022: I’m republishing a couple of my favorite London focused posts because, well, I’m in London right now! 🙂 And a stop at Liberty of London is de rigeur when in London. I always find a gorgeous scarf or two to pick up… Photos to come in a future post…. Cheers!

For me, no trip to London is complete without a stop at the legendary store, Liberty London. It’s a wonderful old building, filled with beautiful treasures and many English brands. And the Liberty prints and fabrics are famous- even Kate Middleton is sporting their cotton lawn fabric face masks these days.

A bit of history

I think my love of Liberty London is connected to my favorite museum, the V&A, in some respects. William Morris’ designs were a direct influence on the Liberty look, and William Morris is featured prominently at the V&A.

According to Shaukat Fabrics, Arthur Liberty, the founder of Liberty London…”spent many years traveling to Eastern parts of the world gaining inspiration for the development of his store and he would bring home beautiful rugs and fabrics from these countries. He involved William Morris and other famous artists of the 19th century in the designing of rugs and materials.”

And I’m not the only one who loves these prints; the beautiful and colorful floral fabrics are used by many designers- including Hobonichi, J. Crew, Supreme, and other trendsetters. As a result of growing interest, Liberty has continued to partner up with designers for collaborations recently.

How to dip into Liberty London prints

As you may have guessed by now, I’m not normally a “floral” kind of gal, but there is something restrained and modern about the Liberty brand. And of course, I love the Britishness of it all! I’m sharing a few of my favorites below (that don’t involve an order from London- although that’s not a bad idea either!) And none of these are as bold as a shirt or jacket- they are a way to dip your toes into Liberty prints.

I’m so looking forward to spending a week in London and popping into all my favorites. And maybe by then, I won’t need to wear my Liberty face mask? A girl can hope!
