After we spent an hour enjoying the Calder Picasso exhibit (as I shared in my last post), we spent another 2 hours exploring the rest of the de Young museum. I wanted to share the highlights from another special exhibit and the permanent collection; both were really marvelous and feasts for the eyes.
Uncanny Valley: Being Human in the Age of AI
The Uncanny Valley exhibit was right up my alley; I love seeing how museums are adapting to new technologies and emerging topics. I don’t want to spoil some of the surprises, but there are sections involving using AI to identify when tear gas is being used, a potty-mouthed avatar, a computer-generated animal, the patent for an Amazon worker cage, and more.
Exploring the permanent collection at the de Young
Let’s just say that Dear Husband was happy to move on to the permanent collection; his art tastes run to the more traditional. I steered him away from the film about death that involved a man eating a snake (??) in one wing of the museum. But he enjoyed exploring the rest of the permanent collection at the de Young.
Wrapping up our San Fran visit with some lunch
On the way out of San Francisco and back to the East Bay, we stopped at the SoMa StrEat Food Park. It wasn’t the best day for eating lunch at a food truck park, but we made the best of it. The burritos were fine, but nothing too special. It was fun to see the millennials working out in the outdoor “gym.” I remembered when it was so important to spend time with friends doing stuff like that, back in my 20s. Now my gym “experience” takes place in our garage. 🙂
What a wonderful visit to San Francisco and a much needed dose of culture as we were exploring the de Young Museum. I highly recommend getting back out there and doing something new, wherever you may live. If we have learned anything from this pandemic, it’s that we can’t take anything for granted…
