Hooray for spring at the Moraga Farmers’ Market

Last weekend, I stopped by the Moraga Farmers’ Market to check out the latest in-season fruits and veggies. I love watching the transitions between the seasons at our local markets. And it’s such fun to see the switchover from late winter to spring at the Moraga Farmers’ Market.

I’ve noticed that since the pandemic entered our lives, the farmers’ markets have become more popular. Not just as a way to escape the questionable ventilation of Safeway, but it’s also a great way to shake up our routines. And it feels like the right thing to help the small vendors and farmers during this tough time. On top of that, the result is delicious- such fresh items, plus Thai food, a wonderful bakery and more.

The market is open on Sundays, 9am-1pm. I’d suggest getting there as early as you can; we were saddened to learn that the bakery had no more almond croissants at 11am 🙂

Panorama Bread is always our first stop…fabulous bread! And Anna, who runs the stand, is a lovely, cheerful presence at the market.

There’s always a line for the custom bouquets.

strawberries at Moraga Farmers' Market
They were almost out of organic strawberries. I bought three baskets and sliced some on vanilla ice cream for an easy dessert.

Not too crowded on this side of the market.

Some Cara Cara oranges at the very end of their season

Spring at the Moraga Farmers’ Market means asparagus, strawberries and the first sighting of tomatoes (although it’s unclear where those tomatoes are coming from…surely they aren’t local??) I picked up a great loaf of country bread, some tomatoes and made a tasty bruschetta for the family. Sophie is always asking for an “amuse bouche” before dinner (this is what you get when you let your child learn French!) The bruschetta hit the spot.

Seems early for tomatoes, but what do I know??

What are your farmers’ market favorites? Is a visit part of your weekly routine?
