A hairbrush for life: Caring for your Mason Pearson hairbrush

My Mason Pearson hairbrushes hold a dear place in my heart. First off, my Mom bought me one when I was young and it was the hairbrush that I used all the way through college. At some point that hairbrush was lost, and when I could afford to replace it, I did. And that hairbrush is the one I use every day, almost thirty years later. And finally, I bought one for Sophie when she was about five years old. Continuing the tradition of Mason Pearson hairbrushes through the generations!

What makes a Mason Pearson hairbrush so great?

I am sure there is some psychological warm glow when using my Mason Pearson hairbrush, given my history with them. But there seems to be a consensus that the boar and nylon bristles are uniquely designed to care for your hair, spreading the oils through the strands and making them super smooth. And the bristles feel so nice and scratchy on my scalp! No one else seems to talk about that, but using my Mason Pearson hairbrush is like having someone scratch my scalp- bliss!

And I won’t surprise any of you when I say that I do love British products. And the company started 130 years ago in London- you can’t get much more British than that! And they are still made in a factory just outside London. Which brings me to the one downside…

Wow, Mason Pearson hairbrushes are expensive!

Yep, even I was surprised by how expensive these hairbrushes have gotten. I swear I paid around $100-150 for Sophie’s hairbrush, just 10 years ago. That price is almost double now. But this is truly something that will last your lifetime. So perhaps go into this purchase with the mindset of “buy once, cry once.” And vow to take care of (and enjoy!) your beautiful brush.

I’m using this smaller hairbrush for travel and in my work bag. I’ve cleaned it and popped it back in my bag for RTO later this month. It will be a little touch of luxury in the drab office environment.

If you can only afford one Mason Pearson hairbrush, I would go for the full size- there’s a little more value and usefulness with a bigger version.

And it seems like Amazon has these hairbrushes for a bit of a discount. But I did see prices all over the place, depending if you are willing to accept a color other than black or can find a coupon code. It’s worth poking around a bit.

How to care for your Mason Pearson hairbrush

Your new hairbrush will come with a cleaning brush like the one below. Don’t misplace it! Or Amazon will be happy to sell you a replacement for $18…

How to clean your hairbrush: Comb through the bristles to pull as much hair as possible out. Use the cleaning brush to loosen up the dust and debris in the bristles (this is a key part of getting it thoroughly clean.) Use a mild soap on the cleaning brush to gently scrub the bristles. Shake off as much water as possible and let the brush air dry.

It’s that simple. And trust me, make this a regular habit. It gets harder (and grosser!) to get all the debris out of the brush when you don’t do it every couple of weeks at a minimum.

Buying something like a Mason Pearson hairbrush fits in nicely with my approach to mindful spending. This is something made with tradition and quality. And if you take care of it, this very well may be the last brush you ever buy!
