A moving glimpse into daily life at Last Supper in Pompeii exhibit

We have been hitting the local Bay Area museums pretty hard since things started opening up in California. And one of our favorites has been the Legion of Honor. We were last there in the Spring, and we headed back last weekend for a new exhibit: Last Supper in Pompeii. The Legion of Honor was forced to postpone the exhibit for a year due to COVID, but now it’s open and it’s wonderful.

“Meh” and not great value at Immersive Van Gogh in San Francisco

I am almost ashamed to say this- but I fell prey to an Instagram ad! Yes, I clicked on the ad for Immersive Van Gogh in San Francisco, way back in January. Bought tickets for the family. And here it is- June. So Dear Husband and I headed into San Francisco on a sunny Sunday morning for a little art.

Immersive Van Gogh in San Francisco

I haven’t spent much time in San Francisco, especially with the prevalence of working from home. But I have heard the horror stories about how bad the city has gotten. When we got closer to the address of the exhibit (in the old Fillmore West building on Van Ness Avenue), I wasn’t sure if the long line was for Immersive Van Gogh or a soup kitchen. It was the latter- people were queuing up early for the first entrance of the day at 9am.

More wonderful culture and exploration at the de Young museum

After we spent an hour enjoying the Calder Picasso exhibit (as I shared in my last post), we spent another 2 hours exploring the rest of the de Young museum. I wanted to share the highlights from another special exhibit and the permanent collection; both were really marvelous and feasts for the eyes.

Visiting the Calder Picasso exhibit on a grey San Francisco day

The restrictions on gatherings in the Bay Area have started to lift! And the first thing Dear Husband and I did (after heading to Marin for dinner!) was plan a museum trip. We’ve dropped by SFMOMA and the Legion of Honor during the pandemic, and the visits have been such a welcome relief. A touch of normalcy! So during this latest break, visiting the Calder Picasso exhibit at the de Young museum was a priority.

An impromptu visit to the Legion of Honor Museum

In our continuing quest to appreciate all the treasures of the SF Bay Area, Dear Husband, Sophie and I made an impromptu visit to the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco on Veteran’s Day. It was a bit impromptu- planned a day or so in advance- but this seems to be the new normal! You just never know what will be open and what the rules will be from week to week.

We ordered tickets online and headed out pretty early to get to Lincoln Park, at the edge of the Richmond District, where the museum is located. It was typical SF fall day- grey and 56 degrees. Perfect! Kate and I used to live in the Richmond, and the day immediately brought me back to what almost every day, summer or winter, was like when we were living there.

SF MOMA art and inspiration on a beautiful San Francisco Sunday

After a couple of days feeling down, wondering when we’d all be able to travel again, I realized that I hadn’t really taken advantage of all the wonderful activities in the Bay Area (well, there was that trip to the Vacaville outlet shops :)) I needed some art and inspiration…

Although I might dream of visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, maybe I could stop complaining! And get a little cultural buzz from a trip to a local museum. So Dear Husband and I headed to San Francisco on a recent Sunday for lunch, a stroll, and art and inspiration at SF MOMA.

I can always find something to spend money on …

The doggies are Lolly and Zoe. The benefits of buying custom art!

I may not have been spending much on gas, eating out, or travel for the last few months, but somehow I still find a way to spend money! Everyone deserves a few treats during a pandemic.
