A few tips for getting (back) into hot yoga

It has been years since I had taken a hot yoga class. Maybe 15-20 years?? So when Kate invited me to join her in a hot yoga class in Santa Ynez, I was a bit anxious and excited. I knew it would be tough- but I am ready for a challenge. So I jumped right in and I’ve got a few tips for those of you who might be interested.

Beautiful venue for outdoor yoga at Olde Oak Meadow Yoga

Kate and I did so many fun things during my recent trip to visit her and Steve. And a lot of them involved movement and health (the rest involved ice cream!) There was lots of walking, hiking and swimming, but my favorite might have been the outdoor yoga at Olde Oak Meadow Yoga.

Adapting fitness and diet trends for my own life

I tend to go down the rabbit hole on whatever my latest focus is. And recently, that focus has been on wellness. And there are a ton of hot trends out there. But I have started adapting fitness and diet trends for my real life. Because I don’t have endless time, money, space, and tolerance for suffering!

How to conquer the challenges of getting enough protein as a pescatarian

I love carbs. I love them so much! But as I’ve gotten older (and done more research), I realize that I have allowed carbs to crowd out my protein consumption. And getting enough protein as a pescatarian can be a challenge. Here’s how I’m trying to conquer those challenges!

Getting my first DEXA scan and next steps

Y’all, I did something super scary this week- I got my first DEXA scan. What is a DEXA scan, you may ask? Basically, a DEXA scan tells you your body composition- body fat, muscle, and bone composition. And it lets you track changes in body composition over time.

Unlike things like body weight and BMI, the results of a DEXA scan give you more personalized and insightful info on what’s going on with your body composition.

Recovering from injuries and getting back out there

Reposting in April 2023: I’ve had a couple of new injuries and I could use a pep talk on recovery…. perhaps you are in the same boat! šŸ™‚

It’s tough when recovering from injuries. I seem to get injured at least a few times a year. Mainly it’s due to overwork/overuse while exercising, but sometimes it’s due to an accident.

I haven’t had a great track record of staying healthy during COVID-19; I’ve tripped (twice) while running, tearing up my left shin and knee, I ruptured my eardrum while swimming in Cabo. Right now, I’m at the tail end of recovering from tendonitis (too much running, too fast) and at the beginning of dealing with some lower back issues (150+ loaded squats in one day). It’s always something!

I’m trying something new- rucking!

After trying a bunch of new stuff during COVID and then paring back on some of it, I’m back to trying some new things. And one of my favorite new things is rucking.

Rucking is pretty simple- it’s walking or hiking while carrying some weight. After that, it’s up to you- it can be a long walk, or short. You can walk fast or slow, take some hills or make it flat. And of course, the weight can go from light to heavy.

How have you changed the way you exercise?

I’m not alone, apparently. Have you changed the way you exercise? Lots of people have. This recent article seemed to sum up one aspect of it: we’re all doing a lot more strength training. And that’s definitely true in my case- but there are a few other changes too. Perhaps you’ve experienced them as well?

Planning a wonderful day at Hampstead Heath in London

I love London. I love the bustle, the museums, the beauty of city life. But this California girl loves the great outdoors as well. So I was thrilled to plan a day at Hampstead Heath right in the middle of our visit to London. It was a magical day filled with being outside and a couple of surprises too.
