The hardest part of being a parent

By the time this post is published, Dear Husband and I will have dropped Sophie off in Boston for her first semester of college. It’s been a wild few years for anyone who has kids. But the pandemic and all its associated tribulations have given me time to ponder parenthood. And I think I’m starting to develop a theory on the hardest part of being a parent.

Taking my dental care to the next level

I am starting off the new year with a few issues with my teeth. It’s a wonderful way to start using up my FSA dollars, right?? Anyway, although I have been diligent about dental care since I was a child, I think it’s time for me to take it to the next level. I’m sharing a few things I picked up to do just that.

How to pick a hotel for light sleepers

Dear Husband and I just returned from a wonderful trip to England and Ireland. We stayed in a number of hotels and an apartment over the course of our 3 week trip. As we moved from hotel to hotel, I picked up a few tips on how to improve the odds of a good night’s sleep. Both Dear Husband and I are light sleepers. Picking a hotel for light sleepers is an art, not a science, but I think I’m getting better at it!

How to stay in touch with college kids

Sophie is on her way to officially being a college kid. But before that happens, she’s got a lot of adventures in progress and coming up. She’s spending most of the summer as a camp counselor in Washington state. And then she’ll be traveling in Europe for most of the Fall. Finally, she’ll be settling down as a college student in January on the East Coast. She’s all over the place! 🙂

So I’m giving some thought to how to best keep up with her. Perhaps you can pick up a few tips for how to stay in touch with college kids of your own.

A wonderful week at Rancho la Puerta with Kate

Spending a week at Rancho la Puerta with Kate feels like the official end to the pandemic. We spent a week there in March 2020, right before the lockdowns began. (We both remembered calling our husbands and asking them to stock up at the grocery store asap!) The Ranch closed shortly thereafter, for six months, reopening in September 2020. They were extremely diligent with COVID prevention- masks required in classes, social distancing, no more buffets. But things are pretty much back to normal, I can report. And it feels like the pandemic is coming to a close…

A few new journaling prompts to get your creativity flowing

I am a big fan of journaling. Every morning, like clockwork, I do my morning pages to start the day. (and having a beautiful Smythson notebook as a journal doesn’t hurt- they are on sale right this minute!) I try to come away with some insight from every journaling session. But let’s be honest, creativity doesn’t strike on an average Tuesday morning. So I’ve always got a list of good journaling prompts to get the creative juices flowing.

How to prepare for the last months of your child’s senior year

Sophie will be graduating from high school this week (as I’ve mentioned countless times!) And I’ve learned a lot over the course of this year about how to prepare for your child’s senior year. I’ve got a few tips for those of you who may be following in my footsteps in the next few years.

How to prepare for becoming an empty nester

Sophie is graduating from high school next week. I still can’t believe it- how can this be?? And I am starting to realize that becoming an empty nester can go smoothly…or it can go quite badly. I am determined to make the best of it!

Best newsletters of 2021 for self improvement

Newsletters are the hot thing right now. This isn’t a post about the financial motivations behind the movement of a lot of writers to newsletters. But it does seem to be a real trend; some great content is appearing only in newsletters these days. I’ve jumped on the bandwagon, and I’m sharing some of the best newsletters I’ve come across in 2021. I’ve got a long list, so this post will focus on the best newsletters with a focus on self-improvement. I’ll cover entertainment and politics/current events in future posts.
