A hairbrush for life: Caring for your Mason Pearson hairbrush

My Mason Pearson hairbrushes hold a dear place in my heart. First off, my Mom bought me one when I was young and it was the hairbrush that I used all the way through college. At some point that hairbrush was lost, and when I could afford to replace it, I did. And that hairbrush is the one I use every day, almost thirty years later. And finally, I bought one for Sophie when she was about five years old. Continuing the tradition of Mason Pearson hairbrushes through the generations!

A few terrific new things I’ve found: nail polish, t-shirts, and notebooks

Sometimes it’s the simple things! I’ve stumbled across three terrific new things that I want to share with y’all. And they’re all under $50- in line with my mindful spending plan for 2022. All three are little pick-me-ups that are bringing a smile to my face during the February doldrums.

Getting better pens for your work and life

When I wrote my post about upgrading your notebook for work, I heard from some of you that you needed some advice on pens. So rather than go on and on about which ones I like and why (and provide a lot of advice on fountain pens- which many of you will never use), I’m going to share a tip for how to find better pens that work for you.

How to practice mindful spending in 2022

As I’ve previously mentioned, I’m working on practicing mindful spending this year. The idea of mindful spending (and its partner- decluttering) is very trendy right now; it seems like a lot of people have been self-soothing with shopping! And to be honest, opportunities to shop are proliferating. Last week, when I ordered some cotton pads from amazon ($2.88), I thought about how I would have handled it before the internet. I would have started a list for Target, worked on it for a few weeks, edited it, and then headed to the store to pick it all up. Now, we’ve gotten to the point where an Amazon box arrives almost daily (and I’m not alone in this!)

How to choose a balance of fun and practical stocking stuffers

Last year, I was all about luxurious stocking stuffers. This year, something has shifted- maybe I am just tired of all the stuff we have? Americans have been on a shopping spree for months now, and I’m ready for something different. Perhaps you are too? I want a combination of fun and practical stocking stuffers this year- and I’m sharing what I came up with.

Three lessons learned from cleaning out my closet

I just completed a mega closet clean-out as I switched from Summer to Fall clothing. It was a fair amount of work, but very rewarding. I am ready for Fall and all its adventures, with a closet of clothes that I will actually wear. And as I progressed through this multi-day task, I learned a few lessons from cleaning my closet that I hope you can learn from. They may save you money, and they will definitely save you some frustration!

Midweek PSA: Vol 3 of Great Mental Models is available!

Greetings! I’m working on a post about terrific newsletters to check out. But in the meantime, I wanted to let you know that the next volume of the Great Mental Models series is available for sale. These books typically sell out quickly and it may be a while before they are restocked. Especially with all the shipping delays. So if you are interested, I suggest placing your order soon.

Four great sources for indoor plants online

I love having plants throughout the house. They literally make me smile, to see them thriving and growing. (don’t ask me how I feel when they are drooping!) We have a pretty good local nursery in my area, and honestly they have upped their indoor plant game over the past couple of years. But it’s nothing like the selection you will find online.

I’ve ordered from a number of companies recently, and I’m sharing my picks for sources for indoor plants. And as a bonus, a few places to find terrific planters and baskets for your new green friends.

Going crazy for pens and paper at Jetpens and more

If there’s one thing I always seem to need more of, it’s new pens and paper. Notebooks, tablets, little cards, gel pens, fountain pens, highlighters… I have an insatiable demand. And going crazy for pens and paper is a low cost hobby.

History of my passion for pens and paper

If you are a pen and paper lover like me, you will understand. If you aren’t, you may think I am nuts to obsess so much over something trivial like pens. My husband certainly falls in that camp; he actually saves ballpoint pens from hotels (shudder!!) to use around the house. Hey, they’re free, right?? In my opinion, if it’s worth writing something down, it’s worth using nice paper and wonderful pens. Life is too short for pens that remind you of your last Hyatt stay. (sorry not sorry)
